Pioneer : Bert LoveIt's the little things that often change the direction of our lives. Like Bert Love's story. In 1913, Bert, with a hundred dollars in his pocket, left England, bound for Australia by way of Canada. He never made it, and all of us are the beneficiaries of his abbreviated journey. With his British roots in mind, Bert started his Vancouver hospitality career with a fish and chips shop on Fraser, then followed with the famous Love's Café on Granville and ran it until 1942. Some might remember his neighbourhood competition - Scott's Café, the Honeydew, the Peter Pan. Bert's sons Herbert and Lloyd would open Love's Skillet in 1950, and a year later, Lloyd would return to the tried and true of fish and chips at a restaurant called Oscar's Fish and Chips. Perhaps not surprisingly, customers ended up calling him Oscar. Sadly neither Herbert or Lloyd are still with us. Love's Skillet retained its special place in the Vancouver restaurant scene from 1950 until 1973. And one more spot in the Love restaurant history was Mrs. Love's Café. It was a name that honoured his wife. Joining the ranks of the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame Pioneers, the man who stopped and stayed in Vancouver ... Bert Love.
