I would love to have been able to say that I was born in Pontedera, Tuscany, between Florence and Pisa on a Tuscan farm. Sounds like the start of a great novel, but in truth it was the beginning of the life of Umberto Menghi. Not wanting to become a priest-can you imagine!-Umberto ran away from home at the age of 12, took shelter in a small restaurant and in short order, with the blessing of his parents, began a love affair with food that would last a lifetime. Trained in Europe, in London, and extending his career into Canada, Umberto settled in Vancouver and for years, in his restaurants, books and television shows, he has bought the soul of Tuscany into our collective lives.
